I was shocked at the creativity put into the worldbuilding and matte paintings. I watched 1, 2, 3, and 4 recently—I think 2 was my favorite just for those reasons. It's like a fever dream. The 4-faced rotating colossal crystal ("The Leviathan") projects a ray of pure mental evil darkness that fills the minds of those who are exposed to it with the most distressing, personal, violent mental images imaginable (or unimaginable.) Cool concept, too bad the script is 💩
I'm aware it's a trans allegory (and does that incredibly well imho), but it's more than that, too. It's also about living a life in which you suspect you have great possibilities and the potential of great powers, but because you don't fit into the world around you, and because you don't trust yourself, you never follow through on finding out until it's too late, far too late. Message: Conservative nonsense punctuated by quirky 🤪 Texas drawl dialogue. Puerile nihilism masquerading as profundity. It's not that I didn't "get it," I got it and it's stupid.
Characters: Cardboard cutout stereotypes that have close to nil character development over the course of the movie, or even enough fleshing-out to really understand their motives.
