Princess Mononoke 1997
Watched this very slightly out of order for my Ghibli watches but I figured with the IMAX release this was the perfect time to watch this film, and I’m glad I did. Getting to see a Ghibli film on the big screen was a fantastic experience. Watching in a theater really helped me appreciate the visuals and especially the score, which are wonderful as Ghibli films always are.

Thought I’d made it through without crying but the clip of the daughter at the end got me. Brutal stuff. Without looking I know like half the top reviews will be like “haha dumb rich people” and like yeah but also these people were trying to do the thing that gave them fulfillment in life and it killed them and that’s sad to me.

There are so many little things about both depression and particularly social anxiety that this film captures perfectly that I've never really seen depicted in any media. The way it feels to want to be social, to be human, but to feel like you just can't. That you're not that interesting. To feel like you can't be more than an observer in things you're already a part of.
Also, Astoria is an absolutely inspired locale to set this film in and fits perfectly; small and quaint, dreary at times yet stunningly beautiful at others. Definitely need to visit someday.
