Thanks to all the folks that came out to my screening of this tonight, good to see people coming out for good cinema and good to see some recurring faces in the crowd!
The way Tsui Hark manages to balance all of the tones here is a magic show, and the way that through all the goofiness, the action and the nonstop pace a serious thread emerges about the performance of gender and its arbitrary signifiers of danger and weakness and how they can be be manipulated and used, literally, for revolutionary purposes. Love it.
