The story is told in a way which just didn’t work for me, interjected with truly bizarre imagery and jarring editing. Honestly struggled to grasp what was going on for most of the runtime.
It feels sinful to speak negatively on some films when clearly the vast majority enjoy it, but I just couldn’t get into this film
Very pleasantly surprised by how good this was. As a big fan of the original Speak No Evil (2022), I thought this would be a derivative Americanised remake of a ballsy international film. It contains much of the same narrative beats and replication of scenes, but the film overall has its own distinct style and flavour. The shift in direction in the third act is very welcome as well.
Both films stand side by side in high regard, each offering a different tone and overall experience for this story.
Extremely jarring shift in direction compared to the first film, as expected when news of this film being a semi-musical came out. The first act is fantastic but then the jarring musical sequences kick in and the film reinvents itself for the worse in my opinion. Despite the film not being completely to my taste, it’s confidently directed and shot with extreme finesse. Joaquin Phoenix is captivating to watch as ever.
