I think sometimes you truly see what actors and directors are capable of when a film is about something small, because you must rely solely on relationships, dialogue, and performances. This film is so earnest and intimate. Everyone talks like a normal person, there are long gaps of silence, there are things that go nowhere. Every person has their own motivations and goals and doesn’t exist only to move the plot along. It’s a masterpiece, and when the climax comes you really feel it because the work has been done to tell you why everything means what it does to everyone.

The Night of the Hunter 1955
Fascinating in terms of line delivery, cinematography, and the arc of the plot itself. Centering the innocence of children, the ungoverned passions of adults, and the importance of strong women in holding society together, truly a one of a kind movie that balances many messages well.
Robert Mitchum’s performance as Lowell was unbelievable, a legendary outing.
It’s a shame this wasn’t appreciated in its time, as Laughton created something remarkable in his lone outing as a director.
