What does it mean to be loved? What does it mean to accept oneself? How does someone deeply abused learn to accept love and heal? Is performative love still love? It's these themes that Lynch explores with incredibly delicacy and humanism in The Elephant Man. While the film's narrative is incredibly straightforward, its themes (and the delivery of them) are anything but. I was deeply moved by parts of this film; I hope that everyone who's watched it learns that to be human is to earnestly look beneath surface level judgements and try to identify similarities between ourselves.
