An enjoyable romp, but I can’t help wondering at what point class and social commentary becomes more of a directorial schtick than an instigator of meaningful dialogue.

The greyscale ending, where the idealism of your technicolor dreamlife is a distant memory, and all you have is a grim new reality to face. What a sublime film. Todd Haynes and Julianne Moore are two of the greatest to ever do it.

Rachel Sennott‘s back must be aching from carrying this entire film. She is genuinely very good here in a film that I don’t feel fully deserves her. Ally Pankiw’s screenplay gives us some funny lines and naturalistic dialogue, but the film often feels really lost both structurally and tonally. Its humour has a tendency to pop up in some very jarring places. I got the sense too that it didn’t quite know how it wanted to tackle the issues it was…

Yes it’s superficial, and yes this kind of plot has been done before, but it’s almost impossible not to be seduced by Emerald Fennell’s neon dreamscape, Jacob Elordi’s sheer hotness and Rosamund Pike’s magnitude 10 motherquake. I’m hating myself a little for getting so into it, but investment in something so vapid and shimmery may well be the point of it all.
