I think I like L'Avventura more, but my girl Monica Vitti is cooking here: with this performance, she goes through most cycles of love & just crushes each of them. Importantly, she also has another inspiring victory in the battle of hair vs wind for us to pass along to future generations. To the extent this is her movie, I am all-in.* While watching, I didn't love the development of the other main character, as it felt prolonged. However, an unorthodox,…

    Le Amiche

Enjoyed but felt like this is one where you can see Antonioni figuring it out. This is much more talky than the other films of his I've seen, & it occurred to me while watching that his preferred subject matter might benefit from few words rather than attempts to explain: it's easier to empathize with characters whose lives are (at least speaking for myself) very dissimilar to yours as opposed to when they put their dissimilarity with you into dialogue. Still—good. Gabriele Ferzetti definitely had a lane going for a minute there. Was really pulling for Rosetta.

In what’s a pretty shitty moment, Mickey 17 is a victory for the forces of good. The bad guys (that pronoun choice is very intentional) may have all the levers of power, but they’re still bumbling idiots & Mickey 17’s satirizing them is a justice I didn’t know I was getting but is so welcome. For me, this is 2025’s The Great Dictator. Pattinson is great, & Ruffalo is on an absolute heater between this & Poor Things.

To get this off at the top, I think this is very good. Incredible performances, hunter vs hunted stretch, & cinematography that often reminded me of Paris, Texas.

But I found this to be a film that is telling you what it is, & I wouldve preferred it to show me what it is instead. The comparison in my head for much of the film (especially its final act) was Zodiac—a film that explains itself to you solely within its own 4…
