Le Amiche 1955
Enjoyed but felt like this is one where you can see Antonioni figuring it out. This is much more talky than the other films of his I've seen, & it occurred to me while watching that his preferred subject matter might benefit from few words rather than attempts to explain: it's easier to empathize with characters whose lives are (at least speaking for myself) very dissimilar to yours as opposed to when they put their dissimilarity with you into dialogue. Still—good. Gabriele Ferzetti definitely had a lane going for a minute there. Was really pulling for Rosetta.

Mickey 17 2025
I understand that many feel underwhelmed by this film, but I really enjoy it. Wanted to rewatch because I felt like my first viewing was almost exclusively through the lens of satire & that I didn't digest Pattinson's character & performances enough (also, it feels batshit to me that the live-action Snow White is about to remove this from the IMAX theaters in days). I love Mickey 17's warmth & empathy for its 2 leads, both of whom are decidedly unspectacular, but nevertheless deserving, guys in their own specific ways. It's okay for us to be happy.

L'Avventura 1960
I don’t know whether it was seeing it on the big screen or being hyper-caffeinated for said screening but I connected with this film way more on this watch.
L’Avventura is GORGEOUS. I was struck this watch with just how much: the phrase “every frame a painting” genuinely applies. At least for black & white films, the only real comparisons I can think of are Kurosawa & Citizen Kane.
Where I think my views evolved the most between this watch & my previous…

Mickey 17 2025
In what’s a pretty shitty moment, Mickey 17 is a victory for the forces of good. The bad guys (that pronoun choice is very intentional) may have all the levers of power, but they’re still bumbling idiots & Mickey 17’s satirizing them is a justice I didn’t know I was getting but is so welcome. For me, this is 2025’s The Great Dictator. Pattinson is great, & Ruffalo is on an absolute heater between this & Poor Things.
