  having watched this and the far-right episode of louis theroux's forbidden america today, feeling pretty depressed about american political culture.

  spike lee is such a master of tone - films that are making a serious political statement are balanced with humour, good characters, great plotting etc without taking away from the message at all. i love how auteured and playfully directed this is.

  finally an indie film that doesn't treat a suicide attempt as a structural point of tension which, once the person has survived, is resolved with very little impact on them emotionally (eg the royal tenenbaums), leaving no space for growth because it is assumed that, since they survived, they're immediately happy to be alive. frank is one of my favourite characters from films ive seen recently, and this film did so well portraying his attitude towards the rest of his…
