A beautifully defiant movie about love blossoming in infertile soil. A love that is able to ever so briefly bloom in a patriarchal world so strictly enforced that adulterers are literally crucified. Lovers as rebels. Gorgeously shot and absolutely heart wrenching. I can’t wait to see more films from Mizoguchi.

Marty’s still got it. If you know anything about this story it should come as no surprise how equally heartbreaking and infuriating this movie is but the thing I appreciate about it the most is how, throughout its entirety but particularly in the last shot, Scorsese highlights the resilience of the Osage people. Lily Gladstone is going to win Best Actress and she’s going to deserve it.
