Daisies 1966
Bonkers. The impishly mischievous and anarchic havoc that is wreaked in this film is something to behold. Even though the film’s surrealism (with hallucinogenic colour shifts and bizarre allusions) made it hard to follow, I found the two protagonists loveable in their chaos and total societal disregard. I wonder if all Czech cinema is this crazy!

The Tit & the Moon 1994
I was so here for the Catalan nods with the castells and the porróns, even if the story was a little bizarre. This is an interesting study on the formation of the male gaze within the context of Iberian machismo, however somewhat disconcerting with our child protagonist, Tete’s (i know!), obsession with boobs which made the film feel oddly unironic. I did like the unreliable narrator aspects however as well as the cute score and aesthetics which reminded me a lot of Amelie, especially when you take into account the off-beat humour too.

Anora 2024
This subverted so many of my expectations, being just as funny as it was heartbreaking. I found film’s crudeness how so many moments were in poor taste fascinating as they show the world that Ani has had to construct for herself. Everything that is left unsaid in this film is the most powerful as it alludes to our protagonist’s past and how she has the best intentions at carving a better life for herself but has been conditioned to respond…
