    Stream-of-consciousness thoughts:

    Similarly to the original one-shot, I feel like this should have been longer, but it is evidently pretty much a masterpiece as is. Fujimoto will be recognized as a generational talent, and I can foresee the same happening for Kiyotaka Oshiyama. Even if I already knew what was to come, there was an entirely new wave of unexpected gut-punches that came with seeing this story depicted on the silver screen, and that alone is the hallmark of an excellent adaptation. Art is eternal.

    Although the Mulholland Drive influence is overtly obvious, this film still manages to be so bleakly comedic, so enthralling, and so terrifying in its unnerving aura in a way that is similar to Lynch’s film, but also distinct in how it utilizes occult imagery and introduces millennial existentialism. This and Swiss Army Man feel like satirical takes on the A24 ethos, as dumb as that possibly sounds.
