a beautifully shot movie that is almost slavishly faithful to the book, sometimes importing dialog wholesale. the book is as much a character study of laurence-- lomeli-- as it is a thriller, and that still exists here, with so many little touches to let raph fiennes' characterization fully breathe. he definitely deserved that oscar; he did so much with a role that, once cut from the internal deliberation harris gives him in the book, could easily feel listless and transparent. fiennes commands it with an easy confidence, letting us feel laurence's anxiety with the slightest dip of the head, the twitch of an eyebrow.

viggo mortensen loves westerns. westerns come up a lot in his lists of favorite films, his influences, his post-lotr work. what does it say about him that he's chosen to make such a quiet, contemplative western centered almost entirely on a woman's dreams, legacy, and desires?

like genuinely, what does this mean. can somebody ask him. is he on whatsapp
