Fun premise and a GREAT performance from Anthony Mackie (excited for when he breaks free of the marvel nonsense) but not sure the themes gel, particularly the contrast of random chance with systemic racism. The small scenes stand out the most, like a pretty funny ending to a one night stand.
First off, I’ll admit I had no idea Martin Scorsese directed this movie when I started watching, I just thought I’d finally see the movie whose poster has haunted me since Blockbuster. Second, this movie is great! It keeps the weirdness simmering at a constant eight where a lesser movie would keep ratcheting things up to 11. Like you could almost believe this happening to someone in New York in the 80s. And the result is hilarious, I loved it
What else do you want from a movie. Unlike some other movies I watched recently that try to be trippy and edgy this one knows how to stay out of its own butt. Visuals are striking but don’t overstay their welcome, the performances are crazy but lean, the story is straightforward but occasionally flourishes in deranged directions. Loved it!
