this is a story about power— what this film does an interesting job doing is showing us the stark difference between Basel and Yuval, one is able to move freely, live a different reality unencumbered by the daily threat of death and destruction; if nothing else but to so show us the depravity of apartheid, the systematic cruelty of settler-colonialism. The Seed of the Sacred Fig 2024
“I’ve shielded you from his true nature” gorgeously depicted compliancy in evil Persian mom representation reflecting the minutia of Iranian middle-class complacency. The family is an allegory for Iranian society leading up to the 2022 Women, Life, Freedom protests sparked after the brutal killing of Mahsa Amini— which the film could’ve leaned more into. Regardless, scratch the surface of bureaucratic patriarchy, and you’ll reveal an authoritarian tyrant; underneath that, you’ll find a spineless brute. A gaze becomes an act of defiance. All my love goes to the women of Iran, the most courageous women I’ve known.

Nosferatu: “Bringer of plague”

Besides the painstaking hauntingly beautiful atmosphere Eggers creates, he brings us back to the function of folklore, the vehicle of myth in Eastern Europe and its clash in the West. What the Romani’s knew and the western europeans didn’t is the inexplicable force of death; disease is the original folklore
