  wow wow wow the 70mm imax is incredible - at the risk of sounding cliche it makes you feel the horror and the thrill of bouncing through a wormhole, of staring at waves bigger than you can fathom, of looking down a cliff into nothing but ammonia, of burning some crops to save your family. an unparalleled visual spectacle, and nothing today looks as good.

  unfortunately......I have a lot to say:

  maska is an infuriatingly backward movie. where it had so much opportunity to say something about the conflict between a traditional past and individualistic future in the parsi community, it instead becomes conservative trash, suggesting that its protagonist is only happy with a love interest from inside the community (just as his mother wishes) and that actually his independent, divorced live-in girlfriend is unhappy and leading him down the wrong path. yet another sweet…

  about as subtle as a sledgehammer but it really works because it’s not pretending to be anything else. i miss the nationalisms of movies like this and lagaan which are defined by an internal reflection of what brings india together rather than the chest thumping machismo of today’s stuff
