I enjoyed the first half, something about it was so familiar and (with emphasis) almost sweet in its oddly dark mundanity; something I have not often encountered in such a way. The atmosphere was absorbing, as I have found in the others of his I’ve seen. But as the second half set in it turned into a steady decline of more marlboro reds and lamentable male desperation for what seemed to hold no weight at all. I didn’t feel much upon its ending, Dong-soo was simply deplorable.

Alice and Martin 1998
Somehow Martin was completely insufferable for all 2 long hours despite being the focal point; almost all plot spiralling from his presence felt unnecessary. The warmth in colours and the hazy sunlight cast over the scenes was sweet nonetheless, though it is a shame Binoche’s character was not so developed beyond her senseless devotion to Martin </3

The protagonist chose to live a life of aimless "freedom" while then relying on other people and running when they provide no more free cigarettes or booze. Every character she meets is then really dull and leaves little connection to be made. I get the point, but this film surely doesn't it explore it very well.
