I'm Still Here 2024
This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.
A powerful document of the despicable actions of a fascist dictatorship in a way that is emotionally impactful; not only were these individuals disappeared, but the lives of their families, friends, and communities were altered forever. The final 30 minutes or so, though, is distinctly worse than the preceding 1:45, falling into the usual biography trap of montaging the Wikipedia page to make sure all the details are included. And there really is no need for the final time jump scene, or for the "here are the real pictures" credits.

The phone call with the hotel porter; wow. Up there with the best moments in documentary filmmaking in recent memory.

Don't Look Up 2021
There's a really tight film in here with a runtime of about 1h 40m. Some of the best performances of the year and some of the best dark comedy writing since IN BRUGES, but ultimately the bloat kills this. Several eye-rolling scenes take a lot of the impact out of this film - especially the epilogue. Goes too far in some ways, not far enough in others, and just had me thinking about this Onion article for the last 1.5…
