100th watch released in 2024, and a nice one to close (belatedly) the year on.

Not without creative flourishes, but a very simple exploration of a life lived and still living, with depth, perspective, and humor that elevates all the complexities of someone who has as high an approval rating as any famous person. It gets at the tension between the qualities that make someone both exceptionally "extraordinary" and "ordinary." Most documentaries like this try to achieve a version of that, but don't fully, and I think this one does.

Sean Penn is very much Sean Penning in this movie and I loved every second of him talking.

    "What's in the booooxxx!?!?"

I understand why that line reading is easy to make fun of and it's not a perfect performance from Brad Pitt, but I love how much he goes for the emotion. My favorite part of that scene isn't him yelling, but the close up of his face when he's pointing the gun. The pain in his eyes and the agony in his expression is so clear. It's an amazing shot.

It sucks that Kevin Spacey is a piece of shit because he's incredible.

Underrated Morgan Freeman performance and the first of Fincher's five masterpieces.

Would have been honored to be a lobby boy, and Ralph Fiennes is incredible in this movie.

Wes Anderson is fascinating and it's hard for me to understand how someone can imagine live-action movies looking like this. It's like watching actors moving and speaking within a beautiful painting crossed with a pop-up book.

His style alone is an accomplishment before the movies begin. Still haven't seen enough of his movies but I hope The French Dispatch resembles this one's spirit.
