The quest for honor is always a quest for honor’s sake alone. There is no reward for doing the honorable thing. Doing the honorable thing is the reward in itself.

When at one point Galwain wonders what’s in it for him to help a helpless character, she responds: “Why would you ask me that? Why would you even ask me that?” This is the question Galwain’s journey is meant to resolve, even if the answer is all too human in its complexity.

    A wonderful experience.

There are many awful ways to watch a movie. Among them is the way I first saw this film: I downloaded a shitty cam bootleg and watched it at home on my laptop. Tonight was better. I went alone to the theater and paid with a gift card someone had given me. In the theater, I was alone. On the big screen, alone, for free has got to be among the best ways to watch a movie.

Better than I expected, I can imagine this being a really fun film at a midnight showing when it was released in 71. The way it resolved was illogical and disappointing, but the ride was still worth the time. If you loved The Love Witch as I did, you will see how it may have been conceptually, aesthetically and tonally influenced by this film. I don't know if that's exactly true - I've never heard Anna Biller actually bring this movie up - but it sure looks like it.

I let my 10-year-old stay up late with me last night and watch this movie. She'd never seen a Wes Anderson film before. I can't explain what a treat it was to watch her giggle with joy and delight throughout. Being a parent is incredibly frustrating and a pain in the ass a lot of the time, but there are few greater experiences in life than the vicarious pleasure you get when introducing something wonderful to your kid.
