  Working class masculinity, sex, violence, powerful women and social politics. Verhoeven is a world class director, and one of the few whose films are at home in the art house and sleazy grind house. Great extras on the BFI release. Verhoeven gives a great commentary as always, boiling over with information and enthusiasm about everything: Dutch social history, choice of actor, use of music, whether a performer actually has an erection or not, how effects were achieved. The same amount of enthusiasm for every subject in fact, in that unstoppable no holds barred Verhoeven style!
