Preminger takes a fairly stock noir setup and breathes some life into it, especially when, in moments that verge on melodrama, he gives Simmons space to simply wander her enormous house and have Feelings. Contains one or two moments of genuine surprise. I could have fixed her

A Fish Called Wanda 1988
Kline's little twirl-kick-jump is worth the Oscar all by itself. A lot of this hasn't "aged well" according to conventional wisdom but it's also a black comedy about bad people with zero emotional heft so I dunno how much that matters (Michael Palin wears a rasta wig and cap at one point if that helps you stake out a position)

Fascinating to watch Gena Rowlands invent acting in real time. The wide berth that Cassavetes gives his actors yields a strained moment or two, but they're easy to ignore in the face of how mesmerizing and unsparing everything else is. I was annoyed by HUSBANDS when I saw it a bazillion years ago but I had worse taste and less patience then and would happily revisit it on the strength of this.
