  Disappointing! Yes, Eggers once again successfully delivers the vibes, but fails at truly transporting the audience into a place and era like he so successfully did in all of his previous outings. The ideas and themes are thinly sketched instead of richly painted, and so are the characters. Count Orlok’s design is also very strange, not in a good way. More goofy than scary. Depp and Hoult deliver great performances though!

  American characters under chinese UV mapping, american dough squeezed into a mooncake mould. No chinese person would speak like that. A very very by the books movie with some nice character designs. Script feels so over worked and through the grinder that most emotional manipulation falls flat to me. Also didn’t care for the aesthetics on the magical moon world. Pastel contemporary minimalist designs feel lazy to me, but idk.. gonna watch Missing Link again.

  Puzzling bait and switch that seemingly sets up an allegory for the suffering that real life immigrants are subject to, only to pull the rug from under you, revealing that this is a actually a pick-me boy meets pick-me Swinton tale. I don’t need good politics in all my movies, but movies that make use of real life politics to ‘just tell a quirky tale’ is tasteless and frankly disappointing.
