Not a bad little pre-code romantic comedy. I've never been the the biggest fan of Ronald Coleman, but I did really enjoy him in this. Also worth if for Loretta Young and Myrna Loy.
If you're looking for a pre-code comedy, you could do a lot worse than this.
Unless, like me, you're in the middle of a deep dive into the films of Loretta Young, skip this.
It's a ridiculous melodrama by even pre-code standards, and that's really saying something.
Don't even get me started on Conrad Nagel's performance.
So the Criterion Channel had this under Gaslight Noir. This is not Noir. It's a pretty great little period mystery, but there is no way this qualifies as a Noir.
If the main characters aren't doomed or ruined by the end of the picture, it's not noir.
At least, Jean Arthur got more to do in this one
