I recently read Daphne du Maurier’s novel for the first time, and upon rewatch I found Hitchcock’s film to be a satisfying and faithful adaptation. This time I was especially impressed by Joan Fontaine’s performance as the nameless Mrs. de Winter. Much of her characterization in the novel occurs internally through first-person narration, and Fontaine excellently captures her tumultuous interiority through posture and facial expressions alone. I also loved how Manderley was captured through the beautiful sets and foreboding cinematography. I found my attention waning slightly in the third act, but I may just have been sleepy after Christmas dinner.
