“Hey, Cody's just a bum. Cody's this, Cody's that, Cody's this… Cody’s me bro. Let me be me.”
Hit me up, let’s talk about movies.
Definitely one of Nolan’s most by-the-book films. His characteristic direction style is much less noticeable here, although he still managed to convey the sense of paranoia and stress throughout the story in a very effective way, making this a lot more than a simple cat and mouse detective picture. On top of that, add a tight script by Hillary Seitz and two great performances by Al Pacino and Robin Williams and we have a very compelling crime thriller.
I don’t know if goblet of fire is in the discussion regarding the best of the best in this franchise, but it absolutely should be. It’s definitely not my favorite but it’s up there, this thing is just so much fun.
The incredibly inventive cinematography is the main appeal of Nickel Boys. It looks fantastic and the POV shots create an involvement with the characters similar to the one I feel when playing video games - and I mean that 100% as a compliment. Even though the screenplay didn’t quite reach the highs of the technical aspects for me, the story was still devastating. It was unlike anything I’ve ever seen before and that alone is pretty damn cool.
Definitely feels like barbarian in a lot of ways. The twists are pretty effective and Sophie Thatcher is very very good. Once the initial shock passes the film loses strength, but it’s a massive fuck you to the red pill, entitled, insecure dudes that infest the internet nowadays and it’s very easy to get a kick out of that.
