Doubt I'd have finished it if I wasn't a big fan of the two lead actors. Premise is crazy enough to draw you in but the cringe dialogue almost killed the whole thing.

Also, why did they make Anya TJ's character Russian when they could have made her Cuban instead, it would have changed nothing of the plot except let her do an accent she knows well.

I watched this years ago and remember being too off put by Jack Nicholson's character to realise how good this movie is. On the second watch I'm angry I ever thought this wasn't an amazing film. Twists everywhere and great dialogue, I need to see more movies with Boston accents.

Weirdly watchable self-insert white knight wet dream.

It starts well enough with a character study on a sympathetic pervert then at about 30 minutes it devolves into hammy lines, cringey romance and inane plot. I was so sure it was gonna turn out to be Gilbert's daydream but no, completely sincere.

On the plus side Polanco does well with what she's given until it's literally impossible (that sex scene was a war crime) and it does have some 'The Room'…

I can't say I know anything about the accuracy or reality of the subject matter here, but I felt like it balanced sensitivity and shock value well which let's the film explore the affects of the events, without detracting from the physical reality.

Heartbreaking and painful to watch at times, with enough light-hearted energy from the young cast to let you steel yourself for the next distressing scene.

Gordon-Levitt has the most to work with here and does brilliantly if a little mumbly at times, but truly the whole teenage cast does an incredible job at grounding the film with natural dialogue and performances.
