Baring in mind 1) it’s age and 2) the fact almost two thirds of it is lost; Chuji still manages to be a compelling and affecting tale in the vein of a Yakuza spin on a 1910s Feuillade serial. In its current form I’d highly recommend Chuji to any Japanese film enthusiast; if the entire thing were still available, it would probably be considered a classic.
A magnificent exercise in form from Rivette. The use of a small number of quickly familiar locations (the girls’ house, the café and the theatre) imbues many scenes with a deep sense of homeliness and belonging, whilst the repeated shots of empty trains rushing through the Parisian night elude to something sinister yet ever-present running parallel to this cosy little world.
