    Captain America: Brave New World

    ★★½

Cap America gets a solid C. It didn’t feel intense enough similar to how Secret Invasion failed at building suspense/stakes. The trailer had more tension. ❤️ Carl Lumbly. The women were given absolutely nothing to do. I do want to see what Sam and Joaquin do next. I feel if there was less Marvel in it, the plot would have been better. Onah is a great director and this felt sanitized. Also wimpy villain.

This tense coming out tale perfectly captures the blissful sting of first gay love and the horrific angst when it can’t be reciprocated. Great performances shine along with the stark reminder that history is repeating itself.

Nicole Beharie delivers a subtle, but enduring performance of a woman who wants to achieve her shoulda, woulda, coulda's through her teenage daughter winning the local beauty pageant. The once reigning Miss Juneteenth struggles to make ends meet while trying to carve a place in the world that belongs solely to her. Beharie is one of our best actors out right now and always knows the assignment. I loved the way her relationship with her daughter wasn't strained with exaggerated bouts of teen angst. It felt natural. Also felt great to see Black people existing in their own world, removed from the frame of whiteness.

Supreme performances lift Rebecca Hall’s film to new heights as she brings the story of Passing to screen. Thompson, Negga and Holland are excellent. Screenplay is precious in detailing the cruelty of this world and the beautiful tragedy of this practice without the visual trauma.
