  I wouldn’t be mad if Riz Ahmed took home the Oscar for this one. His performance IS the film. Ahmed metamorphoses the tokenism of Ruben’s impending deafness, embodying a human rather than what is too eagerly and conventionally depicted as a “handicap.” Rather, his newfound impairment only guides him to discover a way of life not reliant on external motivations and happiness.
