A solid attempt at Filipino magical realism. Do not expect a historical horror film. The plot may diverge and expand needlessly but the core of the film is strong in its main character and thesis. This will be my go-to film recommendation for any foreigner or diasporic Filipino looking to learn about Filipino culture: religion and spirituality, community justice, generational trauma, familial dependency, colonial and post-colonial society, and folklore.
Firefly seems like it is written and directed from a real place of grief. You are lucky if you find this film light and whimsical because it means you have not experienced grief. Packaging the topic of grief with childhood bedtime story elements and making a character deal with childhood trauma and lifelong grief is a packed objective: But the film delivered the message with impact. Standouts are the mother’s acting, directing, screenplay, sound track, and sound design. It will also make you want to go on a road trip to Bicol, stat. BRB, crying about my father.
