    Nymphomaniac: Vol. I

    ★★

Lars von Trier’s Nymphomaniac Vol. I reflects a clear aspiration to channel the provocative intensity of Andrzej Żuławski, yet it falls short of achieving such mastery. While the dialogue between Joe and Seligman holds potential, it often feels constrained by Trier’s execution, which lacks the finesse needed to fully realize its ambitions. The film presents a compelling concept but suffers from uneven delivery, leaving much to be desired. As a result, I find little motivation to explore Vol. II in the near future.

Though I rarely review films from my home country, this one demanded an exception. It’s a great homage to a great man. While Nietzsche’s portrayal may not align perfectly with his philosophy or even his character, it captures his innermost nature as a lover of life. The film radiates a deep love for life—its chaotic yet fantastic cinematography, the abundant classical music essential to Nietzsche’s persona, and Fernando Eiras’s compelling performance, though his voice during monologues often feels dry and mismatched. Overall, a fantastic work of visual and musical beauty, perfect for any admirer of life.

The mixture of religions shown in the movie, from Hellenic names to Celtic rites and Nordic folk traditions being all…

Instead of creating an hour-long, convoluted walkthrough of whatever you want to portray, you could make something small yet rich in meaning and, most importantly, beautiful. Beauty is perfection. And this is as closer as it gets.
