A Summer's Tale 1996
A Summer’s Tale is the most causally heartbreaking film of all time. There isn’t much to it on the surface aside from a guy moping on pretty French beaches with even prettier French women but it’s about everything in the gaps. There is something so divine about a film that realises your thoughts and puts them to the screen. It’s the type of movie you feel and absorb rather than engage, in an In the Mood for Love way. I…

The Duellists 1977
So stripped back, so technical, so uncinematically cinematic. A sublime debut effort by Ridley Scott that is also undeniably gorgeous (that last shot!). A lot of fun to have a film were the plot hinges on two guys who hate each other and just wanna diel. Harvey Keitel has so much aura in this.

Dune: Part Two 2024
Genuinely in so much awe right now. I am so thankful for Dune: Part Two for giving me an experience that feels akin to watching The Empire Strikes Back or The Return of the King for the first time. It’s a beautiful compliment to the first that also greatly improves on every single aspect from it.

Stalker 1979
I find it funny how bleak the Russians are and yet my monkey ass brain can’t decipher the most basic themes.
Anyways, first Tarkovsky I’ve seen and yeah it’s as good as everyone says. Very cerebral, intelligent and spiritual; I will be thinking about Stalker a lot, it is absolutely thought provoking (and that ending too). Very pretty movie too, so many great long shots and tons of beautiful nature imagery. Pretty epic how 3 guys going to a place is as philosophical and enthralling as it is. Stalker balances hopefulness and pessimism really well. I don’t really know what to say that hasn’t already been said. A sci-fi masterpiece.
