Really takes you into its (wonderful) world but at the cost of neglecting emotional connections to its characters. There is a clinical attitude at play throughout, along with a firm resolve in building the various players as symbols rather than people. It’s both a strength & weakness, and in moments it really pulls off its visually-focused approach, yet ultimately the film lacks bite, building towards terror that’s more aesthetic than visceral.

Come As You Are
Craig inhabits Burroughs as a casualty of himself, weighed down by impossible turmoil, crucified in grief, guilt, and desire. Lee haunts the world, past the point of no return yet desperate to find his way back through his self destructive mechanisms. Racing to death, a merciful force of unity.Translated from by

Poor Things 2023
Somewhere in here there is a great story about identity & how everyone must make their own way in life, choosing their own perspectives & values outside of concern for “polite society”. Particularly exploring these themes through a women’s perspective of trying to navigate her identity amongst antagonizing forces trying intensely to control her & her journey. Unfortunately the film fails to coherently connect these themes with it’s characters and story.
This film really confirms for me that Lanthimos really doesn’t have much…

The Menu 2022
Predictable, cynical, & unusually self loathing. Not a single emotional thread until the very end, which starts with the lead saying she hates the food because it’s made without love. In this moment you can’t help but feel like the film has calmed down from a tantrum and revealed that it actually only has itself to blame, which in a weird way is a good moment but it’s fleeting and inadvertent. Next it tries to have it’s feel good “Pig” moment,…
