obnoxious, depressing, sentimental & devoid of subtlety (complimentary)

What a pleasant surprise! Two certified Acting legends starring in a small, weird ‘n’ mean horror(?) comedy(?). So idiosyncratic & strange that it feels destined to be either immediately forgotten or revered forever. I hope it’s the latter!

Like every Eggers movie I found this to excel in its details and aesthetic and to be not very engaging outside of that. There’s a lack of tension and momentum that makes it feel a bit like an ornate flat line. The cast is good, the music is good, and it looks great. Beyond that, a little forgettable, and the fact that it’s such a well trodden story probably doesn’t help. It did give me the strong urge to listen to Cradle Of Filth immediately afterward though and any movie that has that affect on me I have plenty of time for.

    ON GLORIOUS IMAX

Viewing #1: first half is incredible, second half is really good I think?
Viewing #2: first half is incredible, second half is even more incredible!!

This time around I noticed that the music in the first half of the movie is repeating just part of a full melody, and then during the intermission it sounds as if the composer is trying to figure out how to finish the melody, and then as soon as the second half starts we hear the full melody for the first time when Laszlo is first reunited with Erzsebet. Pretty cool!
