Chronically incorrect, a Ross McElwee fanboy, and altogether just a swell guy.

A Scanner Darkly 2006
Still great, though it seems much more haphazard upon rewatch than the first time through. This is strange case where I think the individual scenes almost hit harder in isolation, whereas a whole it gets overwhelming. I still believe it’s better than the book.
I do think this is the best film (that I’ve seen) for Dick’s themes with distrust of reality and social paranoia. With the dialogue and the trippy vibes from the rotoscoping, you really feel lost in the quiet, uncaring dystopia that feels 5 minutes away.

Big River Man 2009
Fantastic ride the whole way through, especially great with people who haven’t seen it before. And it really holds up on rewatch. Last rewatch, I appreciated the music (still inexplicably my favorite movie soundtrack). This time, it was the fantastic editing. Superb.
This is Herzog fanfiction, really to the T. It has:
- Human striving for meaning through a feat of skill/art
- The relationship between the Wild and Civilization, with a crippling desire to abandon the man-world for nature
- Madness
- The Ecstatic Truth
- In other words, a dubious connection to the truthHonestly, fuck it, I’m adding this to my Herzog ranked list.

Everything and Nothing 2011
First half, about the modern history of astronomy, was pretty interesting. I knew a lot of it already, but I liked the presentation. The second half lost me, though. Idk, maybe this is just a personal thing, but I am pretty uninterested in quantum shenanigans. Like I get it’s important and wild how physics breaks down at small scales, but it is way too disconnected from my day to day life for me to care. I can look up at…
