It's impressive how well this movie works, the plot all falls into place perfectly, in a way that is clearly the template for a million worse romantic comedies that don't quite figure it out. Their bickering feels real without making it seem like they truly hate each other, just that they're two big personalities clashing. I got to introduce a friend to one of the most baffling movies that I've seen a dozen or so times, and I continue to enjoy it. The mingling of preachy Christian theming with some of the horniest, gayest iconography imaginable makes for a film that is better the less you think about it. The songs that are supposed to be inspiring and uplifting all suck shit but there's about five villain songs that all absolutely rip. Can't wait to find the next poor, unbloodied victim for my quest to expose the world to The Apple.
What really struck me about Eggers' earlier works is the way his characters' beliefs informed their reality. The Witch and Northmen both created a lot of tension by putting things in the perspective of their characters, and then leaving the audience to parse the unreliability of those perspectives. The characters in Nosferatu, on the other hand, seem to mostly buck and kick against what we, the audience, all know - there's a vampire about. While the Witch left me doubting…
Maybe it's because I'm on a bit of a Sondheim kick but this really hit for me. An excellent use of 53 minutes.
