I told them everything
A slowly moving film that gradually leaves you more and more wound up and frustrated by the limbo of the lead, powerless and trapped in an increasingly suffocating system. Letitia Wright gives a quietly powerful performance, in a role where she has to communicate as much in silence as when speaking, and Josh O Connor is also on point, their relationship so sensitive. I confess subtitles were required at a few points somewhere between the thick Dublin accent and Nigerian slang but totally worth sticking with. I'm surprised I had not heard about this film sooner - a good find on iplayer.

The Awful Truth 1937
*Mr Smith going for the hat*
Really nice comedy, chuckling all the way through. Particularly liked the animal involvement - all the advances in special effects just can't beat the simple impressiveness of a well trained dog actor 😂 But what was the awful truth?

I Capture the Castle 2003
Read the book a few years ago but watching this brought it all back - it all looked exactly as I pictured. I thought all the actors (especially the eccentric main family) were spot on, Bill Nighy is particularly funny as the father. They could have done the nudity shots a bit more discretely as most of the film feels very PG... Anyway, a nice adaptation of a wonderful book - I'd still say read the book first!

So Long, My Son 2019

'We've missed you'.
Had me at one of the very early scenes where the camera just slowly keeps panning back and forth across the room as the family get ready for dinner... Beautiful acting and story telling, incorporating so much societal change going on in the background of the very personal story. The time leaps provide that bit of momentum wanting to put the pieces together - I hadn't planned to watch the whole thing in one, but even then…Translated from by
