I've seldom been less impressed by attempts at period setting. Both 1952 and 1980 look like 2000. I'm sure there are more glaring films in this regard, but I expected better from Benegal. Worse still is that horrendously bad bookending plane crash, especially given the English Patient impressions.

I think I may have missed the point of the plot, but then this is mostly just an excuse to sustain a grudge match, like a more expansive, less violent Kala. It's likeable at times, though.

The birth of the king, and the giving, for the first time, of a gift which has been given time and again in the years since. It's so strange to imagine Shah Rukh Khan making this film, coming on to set having to prove himself, in contrast to countless later films sold on his star power, and goodness did he prove himself here. I mean, as great as Rishi Kapoor (RIP) and Divya Bharti (a Hindi Monroe, tragically cut short) were, 'Deewana' lifts markedly the moment our man rides in on his motorbike - and how else could he possibly have introduced himself to the world?
