A film that highlights the horrors that the antebellum South inflicted on... white men getting pressured into duels. One wonders how Walthall felt getting typecast as "the guy from Birth of a Nation". One wonders how Griffith felt when his copycats started getting more successful.

The good news is that after a melodramatic first half that is equal parts boring and evil, the second half is a black comedy about Wallace Beery teaching Buddy Rogers how to be a gangster. They're both great, as is Walter McGrail as the grandiloquent gentleman villain.

This should have inspired a whole genre of fairy tale adaptations where the antagonist gets murdered by the President of the United States.

Lincoln vs the Big Bad Wolf.

JFK vs Ursula the Sea Witch.

-Regarding my called shot from yesterday: John Ford’s The Iron Horse ends with two men shaking hands in front of a train. This begins likewise.
-Mollie manages to get exactly three words out of Calvin Coolidge.
-Lily Gladstone deserves all the acclaim she’s getting, but we also need to see a lot more of Cara Jade Myers.
-People complained when The Irishman compressed decades of time using cutting edge special effects, so this compresses decades of time with 1940s special effects.
-What holds this back for me is how performative DiCaprio’s permanent scowl feels. Hopefully it grows on me.
