  went to a roller derby bout last weekend and watching this on the heels of that.

  I love a sports movie for girls where the high strung debutantey mom comes around at the end and realizes the sport is empowering their kid to come into their own voice and thrive in a way they never imagined (ice princess, bend it like Beckham, she’s the man, etc). Also Kristen wiig is soooo sweet older sister coded and drew barrymore is having a blast. Can’t beat that.

  I had a fun time with this. Sure the subject matter can provoke discussion on the complexities and implications of modernity and progress versus tradition in Catholicism or society generally. However, I was having a better time enjoying the pomp and reverie in the dramatization of it all. There were some shots that were so mesmerizing (the cigarettes, the white umbrellas) and the tension that undergirds the film made it a very fun and easy watch.
