not a fan of Bukowski, so I normally would've avoided this. And overall, I think my instinct was right: this plays like an advertisement of Bukowski's persona. What kind of turns it around is mainly Rourke, who treats this role with the appropriate ridiculousness, down to the walking around like Torgo all the time. Dunaway also makes the best of what she's given. I also appreciated how, unlike many movies about drunks, it avoids getting tragic or pathetic

Angel Heart 1987
neo noirs were able to make explicit the dark and evil undertones of first wave noir, and this one does it with plenty of character. Lots to pick up on, such as the "I'm from Brooklyn" line which starts out as a witty noirism but builds to some dreadful mantra. The middle carries on for one body too long, though.

While it does have a lot of irreverent charm and some good ideas, it really makes you appreciate stuff like the Monty Python films where they actually get it right.
