Luca Guadagnino is a charlatan. He has convinced us all that he is making some of the most salient queer films of the 21st century when, in reality he specializes in farce — in stylish, fluffed-up, sub-par facsimiles of Brokeback Mountain (a movie that is 20 years old).

    A seminal film.

Unserious and even bold in it’s creative suppositions: What if alien plants quietly descended upon Earth? What if they could take over our bodies? What if they did so in a way that can only be described as bukkake-esque.

Sure, the film’s roughshod execution means it fails to muster much fear or awe or even disgust. Sure, it completely rips off Body Snatchers and a bit of Alien. Yet, dare I say the botanical vengeance subgenre owes something to Seedpeople.
