The only interest part of the movie was the chamber drama with Mifune's character - every time it went back to the police procedural (more than half the movie!) I was bored to death.
Wonderful deep focus shots, and a striking absence of music.

A heartless movie that showed it's hand in the third act.
The lead character was unrelatable; I have very little sympathy for rich celebrities :). But beyond that, the lady had no personality as depicted by the set dressing; this person had no art on the walls, no books, no friends, no hobbies.
She continues on being unrelatable, by doing things I would not conceive of doing; she signs up to use some medicine with very little prompting, she knows…
What a consistently depressing film; and shot so well too. Wadja has this knack for unobtrusive long takes, where the camera just dollies ahead of the actors pointing back at them, that let’s you really lose yourself in the imagery.
The audio track was distinctly sparse, but I felt that this actually heightened the horror (when the guy falls on all those cans, the man making the inhuman sounds in the sewer).
Unfortunately the acting was a true mixed bag…
