  I have a particular gripe with historical films and supposed 'true stories' in cinema. They feel warped and untrue, largely because they are. This however should not be a burden for the audience to bear but one for the filmmaker to hide like a magician. A magician pulls a rabbit out of a hat, we the audience know it isn't really appearing out of thin air, but a trick. Just like this, cinema (regardless of how unbelievable) should be able…

  This felt like 2 different films. The first of these was charming, witty, tense, and off putting. The second being messy, try-hard, dumb, and disappointing.

  Its almost like the writers stumbled upon a good idea, dutifully followed its premise and let the story take them somewhere special. The only problem was, the writers were incapable of writing themselves out of their metaphorical corner.
