A sprawling fantasy that seems more interested in sparking the imagination than hooking its audience with emotionally effective storytelling, which isn’t the end of the world, but it was hard for me to care about characters that were so underwritten, or invest in a narrative that was moving at breakneck speed. The worldbuilding and little magical moments were lots of fun, but the movie needed to aim a little higher with the other storytelling elements if I were to truly love it.
It’s hard to say who the best human in a muppet movie is, but the worst is undoubtedly Ricky Gervais. I’ve seen wadded napkins with more charisma.
There’s a good movie in here somewhere, but I didn’t find the 2 storylines to be well-balanced, and the meta-textual elements felt dumbed down. The set design is incredible, and the performances were quite good for what they were given to work with, but story and characters are king, and both of those elements felt more shallow and/or unrealized than most Wes Anderson features.
