Better Man 2024
Crass, obvious, and as subtle as an atomic bomb, saved only by the engaging figure of Robbie and, to be fair, the fucking sword fight scene. Once you get past that and the chimpanzee conceit, you find that all that is left is a paint-by-numbers husk of a movie, with subjects such as depression and trauma used merely as tools to goad the audience into feeling something impersonating an emotional response.

I think the thing that alienates some people from Sean Baker’s films (and the thing that, for me, is what makes them so fascinating) is that he rarely if ever judges any of his characters. Really glad I saved this for when I could see it in cinema. It’s kind of exhilarating seeing a story that could only ever make sense as a film, truly utilising the exceptional parts of the medium for full effect. Hypnotic and painful. Loved it.
