First Impressions:
This thriller doesn't hit at all, especially one directed by the same guy who did All The President's Men.
Comparing aside, the plot just wanders aimlessly and the tension seems nowhere to be found (something of which a film about a conspiracy should not be).
Of course, Gordon Willis just doesn't miss. The cinematography here is so beautiful.
It's just ok.
I revisited this film a day after I watched it. Now equipped with context this time, I can say that I can appreciate the subversion of noir tropes and the take of an anachronistic PI that this is doing, but this film just left me so unengaged as a whole. The only things I enjoyed were Elliot Gould's performance and a few cheeky scenes here and there.
