I like my movies sad and melancholy. But also hopeful. And a lot of other things. I like movies.

Discovered Mike Mills with 20th Century Women. Beginners is one of his earlier movies and has his signature empathy and gentle touch. Another very human story that remains engrossing throughout.

The gamut of emotions the movie evokes is it's greatest strength, supported quite deftly by amazing performances from Ewan McGregor, Christopher Plummer and Melanie Laurent.

With an overarching theme of grief, sadness and depression as the main character deals with his father's impending death and the aftermath, there's a sadness…

The Venom/symbiote mythology in the comics of which I'm only vaguely familiar with doesn't work as well without the wider context of the entire Marvel Universe. It works well enough, but trying to establish Knull in one movie with no build up in the prior two makes for a jarring plot. The narrative as a final send off to Eddie Brock and Venom however, does work very well.

Supported entirely by the chemistry between Eddie (Tom Hardy) and Venom (Tom…

"They've had it easy their whole lives."

    "You don't know that."

And what that, the story peels away at the layers of what people see and expect to what is really there. As we find out more about the the characters, they slowly and surely become even more relatable. We can't know what people are going through.

Ultimately, it is a simple story of people dealing with grief and personal troubles. It's no less effective for it. Well told and…

Masterful. Evoked so many different emotions in me throughout. Feels so multifaceted.

Absolutely wonderful and beautiful shots mixed with a stirring score. An intimate, painterly, slice of life drama about relationships that really resonated. The tension is palpable in certain scenes and the direction made good use of it. Greta Lee and Yoo Teo's chemistry was so natural and undeniable.

I could spend a movie just watching the two leads walk through a beautifully shot New York City, talking about life and not talking about the questions they most want to ask.
