Saw this at the MOMA’s Girls to the Front: Nineties and Now film fest. This has been on my list for a while so it was great to see it celebrated on a screen (and restored in Philly!). Has some excellent video store scenes, and lots of spirited performances. As for the story (couched in a series of closet space rehearsals for a film within the film), it’s good to see Cicely come to terms with her trauma-based self-consciousness and reconcile with her mom, but it’s kind of an odd gesture to send her mom a bunch of nude photos, right?

The Phantom of the Opera 1925
We appreciate when the monster movie is a monster, and this thing has been frankensteined together over the years, to the point where it seems to refer to the film rather than being a definitive version of it. But all the opera house/underworld movement is mesmerizing, even when they get silly with the trap doors. And Lon Chaney is that bitch.

The Monkey 2025
Ah, a 2025 horror-comedy hybrid that is not also a romcom, an action film, or a goof. OK, it does have sort of an action structure, and it is pretty wacky, but the tone is dark camp. The other elements are added to the horror, rather than serving typical popcorn fare seasoned with spooky stuff. It’s built on a procession of kills but maintains an off-balance momentum that doesn’t feel like a plodding slasher. The promise of a cursed object…
